A judge sentenced former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle on Thursday to 15 years and eight months in federal prison on charges of child pornography and sex with a minor.

The LA Times reports that U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Prat went beyond the prosecutor's recommended sentence of 12-1/2 years, opting for a longer sentence, in addition to a $175,000 fine and a lifetime of supervision.

Fogle struck a deal with prosecutors in August, after a July raid on his Indianapolis home found him in possession of child pornography. He pled guilty to the distribution and receipt of child pornography, as well as traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

Defense attorneys sought a five year sentence. Fogle pled for leniency from the court, apologizing for the damage he had done to the victims and his family.

"I so regret that I let so many of you down," Fogle said. "I want to redeem my life. I want to become a good, decent person. I want to rebuild my life."

Prat, however, questioned why Fogle didn't attempt to seek help years ago. She referred to the 38-year-old's privileged upbringing, before he landed a lucrative deal with Subway after losing over 200 pounds in college though diet that consisted, in part, of eating the food chain's sandwiches.

"What a gift to have such a professional windfall fall in your lap," said Prat.

The defense called John Bradford, a professor at the University of Ottawa in Canada, to testify.

Bradford explained that Fogle suffered from hypersexuality and "mild pedophilia," developed after his weight loss in place of a compulsive eating disorder.

As part of his plea deal, Fogle acknowledged he had sex with two underage girls, one 16-years-old, at a New York City hotel. He also admitted to receiving child pornography made by former executive director of the Jared Foundation, Russell Taylor, and encouraged him to produce more.

"Federal judges do not sentence based on emotion or public sentiment," Pratt said, via the Indianapolis Star. "The level of perversion and lawlessness exhibited by Mr. Fogle is extreme."

Fogle paid $1.4 million to his 14 victims.

Subway cut ties with Fogle shortly after the raid on his home earlier this year, and his wife filed for divorce after he agreed to plead guilty to the charges.
