Justin Bieber caught the attention of rock music enthusiasts once again during his recent red carpet appearance on the American Music Awards. The Canadian singer seemed to have infuriated a few Nirvana fans when he appeared at the event wearing a Nirvana shirt. Bieber also grabbed headlines when he took to the stage at the awards to lip sync his way through a performance of "Sorry."

Bieber looked casual and laid-back wearing an oversized Nirvana shirt over a white top to the American Music Awards. The 21-year old paired his shirt with tattered jeans and a pair of white shoes. However, soon as photos of his red carpet arrival at the awards were released online, some fans of the 90's rock band took to Twitter to criticize the singer for his choice of wardrobe.

Another Twitter user seemed to have dissed Bieber's understanding of the word "Nirvana." A user named Lucy Flawless wrote, "Bieber probably thinks nirvana is just a state of total enlightenment." Meanwhile, another Twitter user named Alex described the "What Do You Mean" singer as a "15 year old going through their indie phase." Ben Thompson also criticized the singer on Twitter and said Bieber "doesn't have the right to wear a Nirvana shirt."

However, the wife of the deceased Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, only had good words to say about Bieber's outfit. Courtney Love also took to her Twitter page to lend her support to the singer and complimented Bieber for his choice of wardrobe at the American Music Awards.

Amid the criticisms, the 21-year old gave a memorable performance of "Sorry" to culminate the end of the event. According to Mirror UK, Bieber lip synched his way through his performance as he danced and sang to one of his songs from his new album "Purpose."

A video shared by the site shows the singer dancing to the song while his voice is heard singing "It's too late to say sorry now." By this time, Bieber is no longer mouthing the words to his microphone.

However, the crowd didn't seem to mind his lip syncing as they danced to his performance. Bieber also didn't mind getting soaked as he danced through puddles of water being poured down from the ceiling on to the stage.

This is not the first time the 21-year old was criticized for wearing a Nirvana shirt. He was once photographed walking on the street wearing another Nirvana shirt. Likewise, Bieber was also bashed on Twitter for appearing on "The Ellen Show" last week wearing a Metallica t-shirt.
