The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals reversed two provisions of North Carolina's 2013 voting law that law groups claimed were restrictive against minorities.
Congressional districts redrawn by the Republican-dominated Texas Legislature were made to weaken Democrats in the state and not to affect black and Latino voters, according to Texas' special litigation chief Patrick Sweeten. The Department of Justice and the Obama administration claimed the 2011 redrawing of the state's congressional districts, supported by Gov. Rick Perry, were meant to discriminate against minority voters.
New Jersey residents have sued the Garden State for using taxpayer funds for primary elections they can't participate in. The seven residents live in a state where 2.6 million voters are denied a primary election vote unless they align with the Democratic or Republican parties. As a result, the New Jerseyans and two nonprofit organizations are suing New Jersey Secretary of State Kim Guadagno.
Primary election season is underway in the United States, but for people registered outside of the Democratic or Republican parties, the right to vote may be in jeopardy.
