The recent firing of Derek Fisher from the New York Knicks came as a bit of a surprise to many though the recent five-game losing skid is seen as the likely cause.

Fisher, who didn’t exactly start the current season on a high note following that altercation with Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes, was only in his second season with the Knicks.

The five-game losing streak was actually just the tip of the iceberg since the Knicks have lost nine of their last ten games.

Though the Knicks have already surpassed their total wins from last season (17-65) at 23-31, it seems that the Phil Jackson disciple wasn’t really fitting into the coaching role after hanging up his sneakers.

"I know it's a relief for him, taking away some of that stress from the job," Jackson said via ESPN. "It's time for us to make a change, turn this team around and move forward and get some wins and keep going down the road we started here at the beginning of the year."

For now, Fisher ends his coaching career with a win-loss record of 40-96.

A former Los Angeles Laker will take over from Fisher for the meantime in the person of Kurt Rambis. However, this early, there are a couple of other names being mentioned to take over the head coaching reigns.

Brian Shaw and Luke Walton, two former Lakers who are also familiar with Jackson’s Triangle Offense, are the frontrunners for the head coaching gig. It remains to be seen if the Knicks would install one before the season ends or save it for next year.

The candidates for the head coaching position could eventually include other big-name coaches who were recently given the boot.

Other names who could be considered include Scott Brook, David Blatt, Kevin McHale and Tom Thibodeau.

Of the three names, Thibodeau seems very interested, mentioning through a source via Real GM that this was one team he had long wanted to coach.

"The Knicks are the job he's always wanted. He would crawl to Madison Square Garden."

Thibodeau was fired in the offseason, though seeing him return at some point is not farfetched.

Whoever follows after Fisher, he may have his work cut out for him.

Under Fisher, the Knicks have already surprised many with their current record. However, apparently, Jackson wants better results and someone who can preach the Triangle offense better.

“It’s time for us to make a change,” Jackson said via the Daily News. “Turn this team around and move forward and get some wins and keep going down the road we started here at the beginning of the year.”
