Republican governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida, both famed for sending migrants to Democratic-run states, handily won reelection on Tuesday.

The two Republican incumbents gained impressive victories in the midterm elections in Florida and Texas by focusing on issues that appealed to their party's base.

Political experts said Abbott and DeSantis' victories put both men in strong positions as they prepare for possible 2024 presidential runs, Wall Street Journal reported.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott Beats Beto O'Rourke in Midterm Elections

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has easily defeated Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke, a former congressman from El Paso. According to New York Times, Abbott winning a third term by a comfortable margin shattered the Democrats' hopes of retaking the mansion of the governor for the first time in decades.

It was a head-to-head matchup between two political powerhouses, who had battled on the state's airwaves, mailings, and computer screens for months.Overall, the campaign cost of the race was more than $170 million, and it does not include the outside groups' spending.

O'Rourke has hoped to beat Abbott as governor of Texas, which has not elected a Democratic governor since 1990. He also ran amid economic woes and discontent with President Joe Biden that dragged down Democrats across the country.

O'Rourke traveled all over the state, attracting large crowds even in small communities. However, he struggled to recapture the fire he experienced in his first major race in 2018 against Senator Ted Cruz.

O'Rourke addressed smaller audiences and attempted to pass himself off as a seasoned politician rather than a newbie. However, Abbott ultimately prevailed by being true to his platform, highlighting the differences with O'Rourke on critical issues like crime, migrants, and the fossil fuel sector, and avoiding the campaign mistakes that helped Ann Richards, the state's last Democratic governor, defeat a Republican.

Greg Abbott's victory over a well-known Democrat means that speculation about his possible presidential run is bound to increase, but he and his advisers have publicly dismissed the idea.

Republican Ron DeSantis Defeats Charlie Crist as Florida Governor in Midterm Elections

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was re-elected for a second term, defeating Democrat Charlie Crist. According to the LA Times, this raises his profile as a rising Republican star who may run for president.

Florida, which used to be the country's largest swing state, is reportedly shifting to the right. Many voters supported DeSantis because he was a governor who enjoyed culture war politics and ran against liberals' "woke agenda."

DeSantis spent a lot of time criticizing Joe Biden, liberal programs, and the mainstream media in front of cheering crowds and news conferences in the lead-up to the election. During the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, he got a lot of attention from people all over the country because he spoke out against mandatory lockdowns, masks, and vaccines.

In the end, DeSantis showed an eagerness to wade into nearly any cultural divide, including immigration, education, and gender, among others. Some Republican voters regarded DeSantis as a logical successor to Donald Trump because of his ceaseless combative posture and ability to leverage the state government's power to his will.

During the campaign, DeSantis was able to raise substantially more money than Crist. The 66-year-old politician was a Republican governor of Florida from 2007 to 2011 before switching his party registration to Independent in 2010 and Democrat in 2012.
