"Orange is the New Black" actress Laverne Cox recently dished on spoilers from the third season and what it's been like to be apart of the "OITNB" cast.

Cox recently graced the cover of Essence magazine alongside actresses Alfre Woodward, Nicole Beharie and Danai Gurira-a group of women that Essence described as "channel changers."

During her Essence interview, Cox praised "OITNB" for its diverse cast that allows viewers to watch "television in a different way."

"People are watching television in a different way," Cox said "People are understanding that [the traditional 'middle America'] demographic is not necessarily one that we always need to target, which is great."

E! News notes that shows such as  "OITNB" are embracing and incorporating diverse casts and African-American female leads like never before. According to E! News, "Of the nearly 30 new series premiering this fall, 11 will have an African-American female actress featured prominently in the show."

Though "OITNB" has proven to be successful among critics and viewers, Cox revealed that she was once doubtful of the show's ability to captivate audiences.

"At one point I looked around and I said, 'I don't think anybody is going to go for this, but this is wonderful,'" she said. "It felt so good. Lo and behold, people really did go for it in a really big way."

"OITNB" is currently in the midst of shooting its third season which Cox promises will include an equal amount of tragedy and comedy.

"I think more of [what we saw in season two], but what our show does so well is has a balance between the very serious and the comedic," she told Fashion & Style in a recent interview. "If you just exist in tragedy all the time, it's not so fun. I think human beings, to deal with a lot of tragedy, find ways to laugh about it. Find ways to be irreverent and keep their humanity in the face of really inhumane circumstances."
