A 10-year-old Pennsylvania boy is recovering from injuries he sustained after he accidentally shot himself in the face with his father's gun while sitting inside an SUV, according to authorities.

The shooting took place while the boy was sitting in a black SUV parked in an industrial park around 10:20 p.m. Saturday in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania. Police said the boy and his sister were waiting in the vehicle while his father was inside an auto repair shop nearby. It was during this time that the boy found his father's .357 caliber revolver and it went off.

"I went in the garage and found an adult male holding a child in his arms," Folcroft Police K-9 Officer Eugene Mackey, who responded to the emergency call, said according to NBC Philadelphia. "I scooped the child up. I ran for one of the police cars and placed him in the backseat. I had [another officer] get in the backseat with the child."

That other officer was Sharon Hill Police Patrolman Stephen Mummo, one of the first officers on the scene. He told NBC Philadelphia he knew the boy had just moments left if he was to survive.

"As soon as I pulled up I observed Officer Mackey with a young boy in his arms," Mummo said. "I just kept referring to him as, 'Kid! Kid! Stay with us! Stay with us!' There was blood on his chest and his head so I immediately started doing compressions."

As Mackey rushed to the hospital, Mummo continued to perform CPR on the boy in the backseat.

"We shut down every intersection on the way to the hospital," Mackey said. "It was a clear shot from the scene right to the hospital. And time was of the essence."

The boy was listed in good condition after being transferred to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The officers also later learned that the bullet had missed the child's brain.

"It was unbelievable," Mackey, who is a father himself, said. "I felt like I could go home, hug my kids and get some rest because it was a stressful night."
