Time to fly high, "Flash" and "Arrow" fans!

CW and DC Comics will continue to expand its universe as it gears up for an Arrow/The Flash spinoff--and they're doing it by bringing in a brand new superhero, Hawkgirl, to the televised version of the DC Universe.

The series has cast young actress Ciara Renée to play the role of Kendra Saunders, also known as Hawkgirl. Renee is an odd choice since the actress is unknown to most of the industry. However, she has had a number of credits onscreen and on Broadway. She recently made her Broadway debut in "Big Fish" and replaced Patina Miller as Leading Player in the revival of "Pippin." She also starred in NBC's "Law & Order: SVU."

"Arrow creators" Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim have been developing the spinoff for quite some time and the new show is expected to have three new DC Comic Superheroes. Hawkgirl was unexpected, however, it seems that popularity of the character was an important reason for bringing her in.

According to Deadline, the character of Kendra Saunders is "a young woman who is just beginning to learn that she has been repeatedly reincarnated over the centuries. When provoked, her ancient warrior persona manifests itself, along with wings that grow out of her back, earning her the moniker of "Hawkgirl."

The new spinoff series will also star Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer / The Atom), Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart / Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory / Heat Wave), Victor Garber (Dr. Martin Stein) and Caity Lotz.

Fresh off a stint as Sarah Lance, aka the Black Canary on "Arrow," Lotz's role has not been determined, but it is highly likely that Lotz could play one of the three new heroes. However, it is unknown which other superheroes will be among the new series.

CW has been extremely successful with its current series "The Flash" which has obtained huge ratings and has also obtained rave reviews. The network has already ordered a second season hoping to obtain the same success.

"The Flash" will continue its season on Tuesdays at 8 PM EST.
