In a recent Entertainment Weekly interview, "Reign" creator and producer Laurie McCarthy offered fans hints of what is to come in Season 3.

In the "Reign" season finale, we saw Mary, Queen of Scots, get redemption. She did defend Francis after he protected her again and again. She also protected the nation that is her new home.

"She takes her role as Queen of France very seriously. And regardless of any feelings she has for Condé, he's a revolutionary, he's a usurper," McCarthy told Entertainment Weekly.

In the past few episodes, fans have watched Mary and Francis become closer. In Season 3, Mary and Francis will come together but not without drama.

"Mary's feelings for Condé became less kind of love and more loyalty," McCarthy explained.

"I think she feels like she turned to him at a moment when she needed somebody. She did it as a way to not feel the feelings that she was having for Francis, which were so mixed with regret and remorse and pain of the experiences that she endured this year," McCarthy continued. "So I think that they've been drifting closer to each other for some time now, and you'll see them come together in a way that's very dramatic and heartbreaking."

The next big reveal from show producers is that many "Reign" Season 3 scenes will be set in England. Fans will meet Queen Elizabeth and get to know the woman who is Mary's arch rival.

"We'll see the court of England, we'll see the Elizabethan court and see the people who surround her. So that's what I'm excited about; that allows the show to have even more scope," McCarthy said.

McCarthy described Queen Elizabeth as a woman new to the throne who feels "very much alone in a man's world." Elizabeth, who McCarthy labeled a "survivalist," has traits similar to Catherine in that "she thinks the end justifies the means."

What else can fans expect in Season 3? Kenna "has something up her sleeve," according to McCarthy. "Reign" women are struggling to survive in male-dominated world. The safest thing for a woman at that time was to align herself with a powerful man. Kenna thought Bash would be that man, but Bash did not fit the bill, so she moved on to General Renaude.

"That, as you can imagine, has taken a disastrous turn, given the fact that he became a traitor to the realm. Now she's going to have to deal with the fallout of that in a way that's going to bring her closer to Bash, but in a complicated way," McCarthy revealed.

Meanwhile, Bash's new relationship with the Woman in White will have serious consequences.

"Something awful is going to happen," McCarthy said. "That relationship is going to go up in flames in a really spectacular and creepy way. And we won't have seen the last of her."

What can we expected between Leith and Greer? McCarthy said their relationship is over. Greer lives in an age where if she married Leith, she becomes his property. She loves him, but she wants something that can never be taken away from her: an income and the freedom and independence it brings. Since Leith did not approve of the way she earns income, she chose to end their relationship.

"We'll come to see is a different kind of relationship that begins to form between Leith and Princess Claude," McCarthy said.

As for Greer, McCarthy said she will find her way "back into the fold of Mary."

A final tease: "We'll see an old friend who we haven't seen for a long time," McCarthy said.
