Hollywood has not been too kind to women, and here lately, an ACLU report has denigrated the industry for their practices. And though many female celebrities have stood up about not being paid as much as men, age can also be another determining factor for discrimination based on gender.

According to The Wrap, Hollywood actress Maggie Gyllenhaal was reportedly denied a role because the 37-year-old actress was "too old" to play the love interest of a 55-year-old man.

It seems almost like a laughable Internet meme at first, but it is real. The actress revealed to the magazine her anguish and eventual laughter on the subject. She is determined to move on and pursue her career in film.

"There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time," Gyllenhaal said during an interview with The Wrap. "I'm 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh."

This is happening across the nation in one form or another. The fact that Hollywood is in the limelight just makes the public more aware of it.

According to Time, Gyllenhaal would not name the role or the movie it was for. She recently won a Golden Globe for her role in "The Honourable Woman," and she is also getting Emmy buzz for the same role.

"A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women," Gyllenhaal told The Wrap. "I don't feel despairing at all. And I'm more looking with hope for something fascinating."
