"Law and Order: SVU" show runner Warren Leight recently spoke to TV Guide about the "SVU" finale which aired on Wednesday, May, 20.

TV Guide reports that the finale featured the exit of Detective Nick Amaro, who opted to leave the squad since he had no hope of being promoted to Benson's No. 2.

Amaro left the squad and made the decision to move out west with his family.

In addition to witnessing the exit of Amaro after four seasons, viewers also watched as Benson was granted custody to Noah whose birth birth father was sex trafficker Johnny D.

When asked to share his feelings on the show's dramatic season finale, Leight described it as a "bittersweet ending."

Leight admitted that he was sad to see Detective Amaro, played by actor Danny Pino, go. However, he felt as though Pino's character on the show was "dead-ended" which is why producers had Amaro leave the show during this season finale.

"It's hard because I'm a hoarder and I adore Danny. But we explored a lot of facets about him and the reality is that the anger he's occasionally been unable to control has put him in a bad place at the NYPD," Leight said.

He added, "These days, there is so much attention to police abuse of power that a guy like Amaro, who has crossed a line a few times, is basically dead-ended. The best that could happen to a detective like him right now is that they let him play out the string with no possibility of advancement and that didn't seem like something his character would want."

But despite Amaro's decision to move out West, Leight revealed in a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly that there is a slight possibility that Amaro might return to the squad in the future since the show has a tendency to bring characters back.

"If you notice, I've brought [Richard] Belzer back," Leight teased. "Munch came back once and we tried to bring him back this year, but there were some conflicts with it. [Dann] Florek came back."

He continued, "When we can, and when the story is right for it, I would love to be able to [bring Amaro back.]"
