According to recent reports, the New York Yankees could be interested in signing Wei-Yin Chen this offseason to their roster.

Theoretically, this makes sense. The Yankees have to add another pitcher to their rotation considering what they went through in 2015, and the fact that Masahiro Tanaka is struggling to stay healthy. The Yankees ranked 17th overall in team ERA this previous season, which isn't terrible, but it certainly isn't World Series worthy. Dominican rookie Luis Severino was the only Yankees pitcher even make 10 starts with an ERA under 3.00 last season.

Signing Chen would not only be a good addition to the roster, but it would take away a quality pitcher from a divisional team. Chen has played his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles. He's not an "ace" pitcher by any means, but he is a quality pitcher who the Yankees could use. C.C. Sabathia has two years remaining on his contract, but he's playing the worst baseball of his career. The Yankees may decide to just release Sabathia thus saving a roster spot this offseason.

The Yankees will definitely have some competition in signing Chen. Luckily for them, there are numerous quality pitchers this season who are free agents. David Price, Zack Greinke and Johnny Cueto lead the 2016 free agent pitching class. Those three pitchers will cost significantly more than Chen, so the Yankees could get a bargain for the 30-year-old Asian pitcher.

All three pitchers who recorded double digit wins for the Yankees last season all had one thing in common, they were right handed. Bringing in Chen, a lefty, would definitely bring a little more diversity to the rotation. Price is a lefty, but again, he'll cost a lot given his elite pitching skills, and the Los Angeles Dodgers could very well re-sign Greinke in the near future.

One of the best things Chen could bring the Yankees is durability. He's not going to win any CY Young Awards soon, but he gives a team a lot of innings and he can get key strikeouts. Chen has started 62 games the last two seasons, and he has never once had a losing record in his career.

Reports have also come out that the Yankees have shown interest in Jeff Samardzija. Samardzija had an awful 2015 season with the Chicago White Sox. He allowed the most hits, home runs and earn runs in the league last year all while posting an 11-13 record on the mound. Samardzija used to be a hot target, but his decline in productivity will have many general managers skeptical.
