Universal Studios is about to relaunch its classic monster universe, and the first film on the plate is the reboot of "The Mummy." There is also news that Tom Cruise is currently in negotiations to star in the film.

According to Variety, Cruise is in preliminary talks to headline the first film in the newly created and soon to expand Universal Monster Cinematic Universe.

Although there is much anticipation that Cruise is attached to the project to star, there is also talk that he will be involved in the development of the film and the soon to launch Cinematic Universe.

There is little information available at this point in regards to his role in the massive project. But the Cinematic Universe has had many details released to date.

For starters, Universal is attempting to create a newly expanded Monster Movie Cinematic Universe for which their classic monster films will all tie in to each other, much like that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that culminated with "The Avengers" movie franchise, which is still going and wildly successful.

Variety reports that Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan have been tapped by Universal to create the Universe, and Kurtzman has signed on to both direct and produce films in the eclectic franchise series of films.

The details of the movie are also vague at this point, but fans do know that the film will be set in modern times, which is a departure from the previous reboot series that starred Brendan Frazer.

Cruise is currently filming a follow up to the "Jack Reacher" film series, titled "Never Go Back." He was going to do a Doug Liman film described as a space adventure titled "Luna Park," but those plans have fallen through. That leaves a hole in his schedule Universal is trying to fill with "The Mummy."

There has been no word yet as to when production for the film will start nor when it will be released.
