The 118th edition of the Boston Marathon will take place on Monday, an event that will be under heavy security, but is expected to be one of the most remembered races in the event's history.

The 2014 Boston Marathon is expected to be filled with emotions as runners and spectators pay tribute to the victims of the deadly bombing in last year's edition.

According to reports, around 36,000 runners will participate in the event, which is said to be the second-largest number of participants in history, and more than one million are expected to watch the event.

"I can't imagine the number of emotions that are going to be there," said Katie O'Donnell, one of the runners who failed to finish last year's race due to the bombing. "I think I'm going to start crying at the starting line and I'm not sure I'll stop until I cross the finish line."

The organizers made sure that participants will be safe this year with reports saying that state and local police can be found almost everywhere, including rooftops of several buildings. But despite the presence of heavy security, reports also suggested that spectators are on a festive mood on Monday morning.

The race for Mobility Impaired participants will start at 9:00 a.m. EST, followed by the Wheelchair Division and Elite Women race at 9:17 and 9:32 a.m. EST respectively.

Elite men and wave one will kick off at 10:00 a.m. EST, wave two will begin at 10:20 a.m. EST, and wave three will start at 10:40 a.m. EST.

The race will be shown live via Universal Sports Network from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST. Fans can also catch the event through live stream via Universal Sports and BAA websites.

As usual, the 26.2-mile race will start on Main Street in Hopkinton and will end on Boylston Street in Copley Square. The official course map can be viewed here.
