Rafael Nadal was sent packing in Day 2 of the 2016 Australian Open after losing to fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 7-6(6) 4-6 3-6 7-6(4) 6-2 on Tuesday at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.

Verdasco, who was a heavy underdog heading into the match after losing in 14 of their 16 matches, gained confidence after winning a neck-and-neck tiebreaker in the opening set.

Nadal, the fifth seed in the tournament, managed to bounce back and took control with victories in the second and third sets. Verdasco then forced a deciding set after winning another tiebreaker in the fourth set.

Nadal looked on his way to victory after taking the first two games of the fifth set, but Verdasco blanked his compatriot from then on, completing the huge first-round upset.

After the game, Nadal said that he was disappointed of his performance in the first and fifth sets. The 14-time Grand Slam champion also admitted that he came into the tournament with high expectations.

"I have been playing and practicing great and working so much," Nadal told reporters. "You know, is tough when you work so much and arrives a very important event and you're going out too early. It's tough, but at the same time, I know I did everything that I can to be ready for it. Was not my day."

Meanwhile, tournament favorites Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will resume their campaign in Day 3.

Federer, the third seed in this year's tournament, will go up against Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round on Wednesday at Rod Laver Arena.

Federer, who is eyeing his 18th Grand Slam and fifth Australian Open title, kicked off his campaign on a high note, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 straight-set win against Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia on Monday.

On the other hand, Dolgopolov booked a spot in the second round with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win against Ricardo Berankis of Lithuania. Federer said in a news conference that he is familiar with Dolgopolov, having played practice matches with him in Dubai last year and before the 2016 season started.

Djokovic, the defending and five-time Australian Open champion, will face 19-year-old Quentin Halys of France in the second round. The top-seeded Serb ran away with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory against Hyeon Chung of South Korea in their first-round encounter.
