Rockstar Games is proving to fans that Grand Theft Auto games can be just as exciting on mobile platforms as they are on video game consoles.

While many of the most diehard GTA 5 fans are anxiously waiting for the next-gen release, others are enjoying blasts from the past -- especially those who do not have video game platforms -- in the form of mobile games. GTA San Andreas is available on the iOS App Store for $6.99 and gamers can play it on both the iPhone and the iPad. At the very least, this offers gamers the opportunity to choose between the larger iPad screen and the smaller iPhone screen.

More than anything, however, the GTA games on iOS devices seem to serve as video game antiques. For example, San Andreas is multiple versions behind in the series and the graphics reflect its age. With this being said, this is how the game always was and gamers enjoy the alternative to GTA 5.

The biggest complaints with the mobile versions of GTA usually have to do with app crashes and gameplay controls. While some gamers opt to splurge on devices to help user controls, others just go with what the game offers.

"The best method for me is the on-screen analog joystick that pops up when you touch the left side of the screen on your phone or iPad, although it also offers an ostensibly simpler left and right button setup or a "flick" method that lets you attempt to direct movements while looking like you're flipping off the poor denizens of San Andreas," Leif Johnson said in a game review for IGN.

Whether Rockstar Games is able to adapt its latest versions of the game into iOS versions is yet to be seen. Considering how advanced and complex the most recent game is, developers might face an uphill battle.
