Huawei's new MateBook is taking on Apple's iPad Pro and the Microsoft Surface.

The company has already impressed the tech industry with its hardware design and construction, which is evident in its Nexus 6P and Mate S. With the MateBook, Huawei is once again displaying its capabilities to challenge its competitors' tablets.

Here's how the device compares with the iPad Pro and the Surface.

Design

The lithe MateBook deviates from the Surface's sharp edges and monolithic appearance. Its thin, 6.9mm body puts it beside the iPad Pro, but its 640-gram weight is lighter than both the iPad Pro and the Surface.

Huawei's convertible tablet also boasts of soft and curved edges, making it more comfortable to carry around. Its unibody chassis with sharp buttons are all-metal, which gives it a premium touch.

The MateBook's screen resolution is also noteworthy and is as good as what's in Apple and Microsoft's products. The tablet is equipped with a 12-inch IPS LCD that has a sharp resolution of 2160x1440 pixels, 400 nits of brightness and 85 percent of NTSC color gamut. The MateBook's screen also has a 10mm bezel, which is thinner than the iPad Pro and Surface.

Hardware

The MateBook is powered by Intel's Core M processors, with Windows 10 serving as its operating system. Its 33.7Wh battery promises good longevity and will reportedly last for around 10 hours of standard usage.

The iPad Pro, meanwhile, has an A9X processor and runs on iOS 9. The Surface is equipped with an Intel Core processor, Windows 8 as its OS and a 42 W-h battery life.

Keyboard and Stylus

The MateBook's water resistant keyboard worth $129 has large keys and a key travel figure of 1.5mm, which is more than the Surface's 1.3mm. Its trackpad is large and responsive, and its two angles of tilt clock in at 67 and 54 degrees. The tablet's stand mechanism is somewhat similar to Apple's iPad Pro, wherein you fold up a part of the case as a stand. This means that the MateBook is not suited to use on your lap or in bed as a laptop.

The MateBook's $59 MatePen, which is lightweight thanks to its plastic structure, has 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity and elastomer tip. The stylus can also function as a clicker for PowerPoint presentations and as a laser pointer.

Another accessory is the MateDock, which costs $89. The accessory is small, light and aptly made, and showcases HDMI, Ethernet, VGA and two USB ports.

Price

Huawei's MateBook starts selling at $699 for a 128GB variant with 4GB of RAM and an Intel Core M processor. The iPad Pro's standard price is around $750, while the Surface's most basic model is $499 and can reach up to $3,199.

The MateBook will roll out in Asia, Europe and North America in the coming months, possibly in March.
