Details about Martin Freeman's role in "Captain America: Civil War" have been revealed in a recent interview with Empire Magazine.

The English actor will be portraying Everett Ross, who worked for the U.S. State Department in the Marvel Comics. Ross was responsible for bringing foreign diplomats into America, a duty that made him tied up with Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther, the African king of Wakanda.

Ross works with the Joint Counter Terrorist Center. Given that a promotional photo features him standing alongside Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) and a SWAT team, it's likely that he belongs to the group attempting to quell the actions of Captain America (Chris Evans) and the superheroes who refuse to abide with the Sokovia Accords.

Ross' close alliance with Black Panther in the comics suggests that he will have a key role in upcoming Marvel films, especially in the 2018 "Black Panther" movie directed by Ryan Coogler. Marvel executive Kevin Feige confirmed that Black Panther will be a neutral character in the rift between superheroes, but the same isn't to be expected in Freeman's Ross.

"You're not quite sure which side he's on," Freeman, 44, said in an interview earlier this year. "It looks a little bit like he's playing one game when, actually, he's playing another. It's the kind of character I like because it's ambiguous and because you don't know whether he's, you know, good or bad."

Joe Russo, who co-directed the movie alongside his brother Anthony, said that "Civil War" will have a significant impact on Marvel's Phase 3 slate.

"In 'Civil War,' we're going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe's psychology, and it's an extreme shift," the filmmaker added.

Anthony said that even though the film is being told from Captain America's perspective, "we do take time and walk ourselves through the story from every single character's point of view as if it's their movie."

'Iron Man' Character Coming to 'Civil War'

It was recently reported that Gwyneth Paltrow will reprise her role as Pepper Potts, CEO of Stark Industries, in "Civil War."

The Russo brothers said that Paltrow joined during reshoots for the flick, so it's likely that the actress' involvement will be minor. The character was last seen in "Iron Man 3," when Paltrow's Marvel contract expired.

Other characters onboard in the star-studded "Civil War" are Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Vision (Paul Bettany), Crossbones (Frank Grillo), Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

"Captain America: Civil War" bows in U.S. theaters on May 6.
