On the anniversary of the D-Day landings on Friday, a stabbing attack reportedly took place at a Virginia Navy base, which has been put on lockdown by authorities.

The attack happened Friday morning at around 8:30 a.m. local time in front of the Navy Exchange, a type of store only found inside American military installations. According to the Virginian-Pilot, police responded and appeared on the scene at 9:05 a.m.

Personnel stationed in various other buildings, including the Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, Portsmouth Annex, have been ordered to take shelter and the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center has been placed under lockdown. Neither police nor the Navy have yet to release the victim's identity or condition but he or she sustained critical injuries and is receiving treatment at the Navy hospital reports the Virginian-Pilot.

At 10:25 a.m. more police officers arrived on the scene with two K-9 units. Also, according to police spokeswoman Detective Misty Holley, the police activated the SWAT team and plainclothes detectives arrived at the scene as well. According to another news release from the Navy, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the FBI appeared on the scene soon after.

According to local news station WAVY, the suspect had been seen by witnesses and was described as a white male with blonde hair and blue eyes weighing about 165 pounds. He was wearing tan cargo pants, a white t-shirt and blue sneakers at the time of the incident. However, the man has now been identified as 26-year-old Wilbur Harwell, an active duty sailor.

The base went into a Code White, which closed all inbound and outbound traffic. A Code White means that either a shooter or armed suspect is loose in the area.

"Code White, Code White, this is not a drill," a message sent to staff said. Staff and anyone in the area have been urged to report suspicious activity to 757-953-4220. According to the latest report by WAVY, the suspect knew the victim and Harwell stabbed him following an argument.
