Recently, the Corona beer brand has become the latest victim for its name's similarity with the novel coronavirus or COVID-19. The world-famous beer's name-association with the COVID-19 has significantly affected its sales.

Falling Trend of Sales for Corona Beer

The purchase intent rate for the Corona beer had dropped to its lowest level in a duration of two years, reported by YouGov, a data company. Purchase intent means the possibility that a customer will purchase a certain good.

According to the producers of Corona Beer, Constellation Brands identified a drop of stock of 8% last week.

Corona Brand Circulating Multiple Social Media Platforms and Search Engines

An article from Mexico News Daily stated that the primary reason for this outcome is pointing to the involvement of the Corona beer brand in multiple memes, jokes, and videos circulating through different social media platforms.

Many online search engines had also released reports stating the rising trend of searches for keywords such as 'beer coronavirus' and 'corona beer virus.'

The Corona Brand's Statistics

The 'buzz score' given by YouGov is the measurement of the positive or negative association the society had with a certain product. The Corona brand's YouGov 'buzz score' had dropped to 51 from 75 since the beginning of this year. The dropped to coincide with the spread of the coronavirus across the globe.

The Corona brand is the 3rd most popular beer brand in the United States of America, reported by YouGov data. Guinness and Heineken take the first and second rankings.

Perceived Cause of the Beer Brand's Fluctuations in Sales

Graeme Bruce, a journalist from YouGov business data, stated that the Berr brand may also be impacted by the company's low season. Since the beer is highly associated with the beach and the sun, this summer beer that is perfect for the warm weather is currently at a challenging season.

According to Bruce, the beer's reputation had resulted in relevant seasonal changes in the sales of the brand.

Mexico's First Two Confirmed COVID-19 Cases

One additional factor that can affect the reputation of the corona brand with a false association with the latest coronavirus outbreak. This graveness of the issue intensifies further as Mexico confirms its first two cases of the coronavirus.

An article from AP News stated that the assistant health secretary of Mexico had made an announcement on Friday about the confirmation of the first two cases of the coronavirus infection in the country.

According to Hugo Lopez-Gatell, one of the confirmed cases is in Mexico City while the other is in the northern state of Sinaloa. However, the second case of the virus is still under investigation but the country is already considering it as a confirmed case. The first case is isolated in a hospital in Mexico while the other one is quarantined at a hotel.

At least five of the people whom the first confirmed case had made close contact had been quarantined. It was reported that the men had gone to northern Italy before getting the virus. Italy had been reported to have an outbreak of the disease. The infected men were reported to have returned to Mexico on Friday and Saturday last week.
