Fans Roast Tom Hanks for Using Too Much Vegemite

Many were saddened when Hollywood actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson were tested positive for coronavirus, but in a recent article, he grabbed the attention of fans for the wrong reasons.

The Castaway actor who was being treated at the Gold Coast University Hospital along with his wife, thanked his carers through a Twitter post on Sunday.

He captioned the post: 'Thanks to the Helpers. Let's take care of ourselves and each other. Hanx'

The photo accompanying the 63-year-old actor's tribute, features his breakfast, a tube of Vegemite, and a kangaroo toy nearby.

Said Twitter post gained strong reaction from fans not because of the heartfelt message but because of the very thick spread of Vegemite Tom applied to his toast.

Vegamite, a yeast sandwich spread, is a household staple in Australia, but a general rule in applying this is that consumers use just a thin smattering across a buttered bread. Vegemite is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract which is a by-product of beer manufacturing. It also includes various vegetable and spice additives.

If you're curious how Vegemite tastes like, imagine beef bouillon. The taste is described as salty, slightly bitter, and malty while its texture is smooth and sticky, much like peanut butter.

Everyone in the comment section couldn't help but point out to the thick Vegemite, gently mocking the actor for his over-application of the spread despite his current medical condition.

One person Tweeted: 'That's enough Vegemite to kill a horse. Hanx don't play. #usesparingly'.

Another added: 'Tom, I mean this with all the respect and love in the world, but that is too much Vegemite.'

Another tweet reads: 'That Vegemite is so thick I am SHAKING' while another added: 'Mate, what's going on with that Vegemite ratio?'

Some fans however supported the move, saying the spread may be therapeutic and consoling the actor that a lot of Vegemite is best - and in fact is the 'professional level' amount.

On March 11, Tom and Rita announced their positive diagnosis, identifying the symptoms that led to them being tested.

'We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too,' Tom captioned on his Instagram post.

Since then, the couple have been active in sharing updates on their health, as well as the activities they've been doing to get through these trying times.

Married since 1988, Tom and Rita share two sons together, Chester and Truman.

The Toy Story actor also has a son and daughter, Colin and Elizabeth, from his first marriage to Samantha Lewes.

As of this writing, there are more than 182,000 confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide with more than 7,125 deaths. Despite the mortality rate, it is also worthy to note that more than 78,000 have recovered from the deadly disease.

In Australia, as of this writing, there are more than 300 reported cases of coronavirus, including five deaths.

In times like this, the humor people find in social media, such as Tom Hank's use of Vegemite, is indeed a stress-reliever.
