On April 20, bioluminescence was observed on the beach of Puerto Marqués, in Acapulco. Luckily for us and our appreciation, it was caught on camera and posted on social media.

Many beaches were closed in the country to prevent mass gatherings and to follow other guidelines in preventing the further spread of SARS-CoV-2. Despite the strength of the COVID-19 to spread to different nations in the world and affect the lifestyle of people and the economy of a country, it holds no power to prevent this phenomenon from occurring.

Bioluminescence is a phenomenon that occurs when creatures produce light due to a biochemical reaction. This reaction is often caused by the enzyme called luciferase. Bioluminescence can be brought by various types of organisms, such as mollusks, jellyfish, bacteria, and fish.

The bioluminescence observed in Acapulco was caused by microalgae or luminous plankton. And although this phenomenon is new to this particular beach, Puerto Marqués is not the only place where bioluminescence can be seen in the country.

As there are other destinations where bioluminescence can be observed in the country, here are some places in Mexico where this phenomenon can be witnessed:

Holbox, Quintana Roo

Holbox is located in the northern part of the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico. It is a tiny romantic island that is perfect for a great escape from the busy lifestyle typical in urban areas. This island boasts a peaceful and crystalline sea. It similarly looks like a big pool due to its few to no waves.

In the evenings of May to September, small blue lights can be seen to appear on the beach.

Chacahua, Oaxaca

Chacahua also allows people to witness the wonders of bioluminescence where blue, green, and silver tones are seen in the five lakes of this national park in Oaxaca. It is an ideal place for backpackers. The best time to see this majestic phenomenon is from August to March.

Xpicob, Campeche

This is a camp that is known for conserving the region's flora and fauna. From July to November, people can enjoy a walk or a boat ride at night and witness bioluminescence. Additionally, people who visit the area during that time can also take part in the release of turtles. Also, a school of jumping fish and manta rays can be seen leaving a trail of light.

Manialtepec Lagoon, Oaxaca

This lagoon is located just 15 minutes from Puerto Escondido. It gives out a surprise to visitors in the area for its rich biological aspects and beautiful mangrove vegetation. In the evening, bioluminescence can be seen in the water. This phenomenon continues in the rainy season. The best month to see this incredible phenomenon is in September.

Bahia Bucerías, Nayarit

Bucerías is an excellent place to take a rest and enjoy nature. It is an area far from big hotel complexes of Riviera Nayarit, which is more or less 18 kilometers from the Puerto Vallarta airport. This is the perfect place to be if you came to Mexico to witness the beautiful phenomenon of bioluminescence.
