Confirmed cases of coronavirus disease are still increasing across the United States. You can only do so much in your own part to avoid getting the disease.

There are certain measures to reduce the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). These include proper handwashing with soap and water, practicing social distancing, staying at home, and wearing a face mask in public, especially when social distancing is difficult to do.

However, kids might have a hard time adjusting to the practice of wearing face masks. Also, they might not understand its importance at first. But for some, depending on their age, they might be eager to wear a mask and embrace the new look.

Surely, getting your kids to wear a face mask can be challenging. But it is not impossible.

This also serves as a safety measure, especially that kids are not immune to COVID-19. Here are some ways parents can get their kids to wear a face mask.

1. Educate your child why it is important

Lauren Faubel, Certified Child Life Specialist at Children's Health, said for younger kids, you should explain it through simple and concrete terms.

You can say that wearing a mask can help to keep her safe and others around. You can also say it can help protect her from other germs.

For older children, you can explain it to them thoroughly. You can include some information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that show masks can help reduce the spread of the virus.

2. Normalize Face Masks Through Play

Children learn things through play. Try putting a mask on their toy and consider having your child practice wearing the mask with the toy. In this way, your child can become familiar with the new situation.

3. Be Creative

There are a wide variety of face masks that you can choose from. Look for a cloth mask that has your child's favorite color or character. If you want to be more crafty, you can make your face coverings at home. Let them be part of the process of choosing the design.

"If possible, have a few different mask options for your child, so they can decide which mask they want to wear that day," Faubel suggested. However, aside from the design, make sure that the face mask can be easily washed and suitable for your child's age.

4. Ensure Your Child's Comfort

Aside from choosing a face mask based on your child's favorite color, make sure that they are also comfortable and will help them not fidget with it.

The face mask should also fit over your child's nose and mouth. Make sure that your child can breathe when wearing the mask.

5. Wear Your Own Mask

Show that you are also doing the practice yourself. Faubel said kids are always watching and listening.

"They will notice how you talk about face masks and how you react when wearing one - and they will follow your lead," Faubel noted.

Encourage your kid to wear a face mask with positive language. Accept how they react to it at first and let them slowly accept what's new for them.

Also, comfort them and make sure that they know you are always there for them to help them and support them. They can easily adjust when they feel safe.
