The San Diego Police Department has released a video footage Monday that appeared to show three police officers chasing an armed suspect minutes before he fell to his knees and was fatally shot in the back.

According to NBC News, the almost 10-minute edited video was put together to show the police narrative of the events on the night of July 23 when three cops chase and shot Jesus Valeta.

The edited footage, which was uploaded online, contains aerial helicopter and bodycam videos of the officers who chased and shot the 22-year-old victim, who allegedly tried to shoot them. Police have yet to identify the involved officers.

In a statement, the San Diego Police Department said the incident started when officers responded to a call regarding a possible shooting in the neighborhood of El Cerrito.

Upon their arrival, officers found a 29-year-old man who has been shot multiple times. Based on the video released this week, witnesses told officers about a vehicle that fled after the shooting.

Investigation on the Video Continues

The police video started with an aerial video from a helicopter that located the suspected getaway vehicle of Valeta. The helicopter video at one point showed a police vehicle following a car before it stopped in a parking lot close to 54th Street and El Cajon Boulevard.

In the video, a man can be seen getting out of the vehicle and started to run. Aerial video also showed that the other two officers got out of a patrol vehicle. A voice on the video said over the police airwaves that the man who exited the vehicle has a gun in his hand.

The video incorporates freeze-frames that police said had captured Valeta holding a gun moments before two officers fired at him outside a nearby drive-thru restaurant.

The video also showed officers telling him to stop and drop the gun. Police can be heard in the video saying, "Mr. Valeta had his finger on the trigger of the gun."

Police also mentioned in the video that Valeta made a backward motion with his arm with the gun in his hand, prompting the two officers to shoot him.

After being shot at least once, Valeta was pronounced dead at a hospital, and police said they had recovered Valeta's gun at the scene. Based on their initial assessment of the scene, police investigators said they had determined that the trigger on the gun has been pulled, and there was a round in the chamber that did not fire.

Meanwhile, police noted that the three other men with Valeta in the car were suspected of being involved in a second shooting early that day. Police said the three men were already arrested but did not disclose their identities and the charges they were arrested on.

The San Diego County district attorney's office said it would review the investigation to determine whether any actions among the officers could be considered a criminal act.

The police department's internal affairs unit would also determine whether officers violated any policies. Aside from them, the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office are also monitoring.
