Will Smith was "devastated" after he slapped comedian Chris Rock during this year's Oscars, according to Tyler Perry.

Perry, who claims to be good friends with Rock and Smith, shared what the actor felt after slapping the comedian during a storyteller conversation with Gayle King at Tribeca Film Festival, according to NBC News.

"I was there close up, I left early to go and check on Chris because it was wrong in no uncertain terms... I made sure I said that to Will, and when we walked over to him, he was devastated. He couldn't believe what happened," Perry said.

Perry went on to say that Smith is in "reflection" of trying to figure out what happened.

Tyler also shared that the pain Rock felt during the Oscars was also felt by everyone in the room.

He claimed that he left early to get to Chris and make sure that he was okay after what happened. However, Perry noted that what happened was also painful for Will Smith, according to the Daily Mail.

"He was completely wrong for what he did. But something triggered him - that is so out of everything he is," the actor-director-producer underscored.

Childhood Trauma Played a Role on Will Smith Slap - Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry also shared during his conversation with Gayle King that Smith's childhood trauma played a role in the infamous Oscars slap during the ceremony.

The actor noted that he read Smith's book entitled "Will," noting that a section in the memoir talks about not being able to protect his mother as a child. Perry sympathized with the actor, claiming that he knew that feeling, and he was getting chills just thinking about it.

Perry then noted the importance of dealing with such traumas right away.

"If that trauma is not dealt with right away, as you get older it will show up in the most inappropriate, most horrible time. I know Will. I know him well," Perry pointed out.

It has been two months since Will Smith slapped Chris Rock when the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, for being bald. Rock apparently did not know that she was suffering from alopecia.

Smith apologized to Rock through an Instagram post a day after the incident.

Smith's actions during the Oscars backfired, as the Academy banned him from attending the event in-person or virtually for at least 10 years. Veteran Screen and Stage Actor Harry Lennix also urged Smith to return his award, but the Academy said that they have no authority to claim back his accolade.

Jada Pinkett Smith's Plea on Chris Rock and Will Smith

Jada Pinkett Smith has recently expressed that she wanted Chris Rock and Will Smith to reconcile after the incident.

Speaking at Fakebook's "Red Table Talk," the actress noted that the state of today's world needs the two guys, pointing out that the people need one another "more than ever."

However, a source told Entertainment Tonight that Chris Rock is not concerned with what Pinkett Smith wants, adding that the comedian is focused on his tour and is preparing for his comedy special.
