Al Pacino, Francis Ford Coppola, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and other Hollywood stars are mourning the death of legendary "The Godfather" actor James Caan.

On Thursday, Caan's family announced through the actor's Twitter account that he died on July 6. He died at age 82.

"It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time," the actor's family said.

A cause of death has not been revealed. Tributes then flooded in for the actor, who was also famous for his roles in "Misery," "Elf," "Mickey Blue Eyes," "The Rain People," and over 100 other movies he acted in, according to Daily Mail.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Caan's "The Godfather" co-actor Al Pacino said the iconic actor was his "fictional brother and his lifelong friend."

In a statement to Deadline, Francis Ford Coppola, the director of "The Rain People" and "The Godfather" films, said Caan will "never be forgotten."

Francis Ford Coppola noted that Caan was "someone who stretched through my life longer and closer than any motion picture figure I've ever known."

The director added that Caan will always be his "old friend from Sunnyside, my collaborator and one of the funniest people I've ever known."

Arnold Schwarzenegger also paid tribute to the actor, calling him an "icon" and a "legend." He said he was lucky to work with Caan and see his talent and "fantastic sense of humor."

Arnold Schwarzenegger added that he will "miss" the actor, who is a "true friend."

James Caan's son, Scott Caan, told People that he had "no resentment" toward his father. Scott said his father made mistakes that affected both of them, but he was always been there for him "no matter what."

Other Hollywood Co-Stars and Friends Who Paid Tribute to James Caan

Other Hollywood co-stars and friends also paid tribute to James Caan after his death. Robert De Niro said he was "very, very sad" to learn about the actor's passing.

Antonio Banderas called Caan a "great actor" and offered his condolences to the actor's family and loved ones.

Barbara Streisand shared a photo of her and James Caan on Twitter and expressed sadness about the actor's death.

"I'm so sorry to hear about Jimmy. He was so talented," Streisand said.

Adam Sandler tweeted that he loved James Caan "very much" and always wanted to be like him. 

"So happy I got to know him. Never ever stopped laughing when I was around that man. His movies were best of the best. We all will miss him terribly. Thinking of his family and sending my love," the actor noted.

James Caan was born in Germany during the Second World War in 1940. His Jewish parents then emigrated to the Bronx in New York City.

Caan managed to have a staggering six-decade career despite suffering from drug problems, minor brushes with the law, and temper outbursts.

The actor was best known for his role as Sonny Corleone in "The Godfather." Caan was married four times and had five children.

After the death of his sister, Caan battled clinical depression. He then opened up about using cocaine for a little while to cope with the sadness brought by the tragedy.

Last year, Caan was spotted using a walker after spending some time in a wheelchair to recover from his back surgery in 2020. According to Daily Mail, the actor was believed to have a net worth of $20 million.
