Colombia is one of the most beautiful countries in Latin America. From lush jungles to beautiful beaches, from beautiful Spanish-era churches to former abodes of infamous drug lords, the country has a lot to offer for travelers.

Before we proceed, though, it is important to note that when planning to visit Colombia, COVID-19 restrictions are still in place as of writing. The government requires visitors a proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test result before departure.

That being said, the country has experienced its ups and downs, but tourism is still very much important to the economy. So, which are the best places to visit?

5 Places To Visit in Colombia

Hacienda Nápoles

Pablo Escobar and his Medellin Cartel became the most infamous drug cartel in the world. His drug empire eclipsed many of the current ones today, as he held power through intimidation, coercion, and his own private army. However, did you know you can also visit his former home?

Located 110 miles east of Medellin, Hacienda Nápoles is a lavish estate best known for serving as the home to Pablo Escobar. The estate itself fell into disrepair after his violent death in 1993, but the local government of Puerto Triunfo took control of the property and turned it into a tourist destination. Instead of bags of cocaine and an armory of guns, the estate now has hotels, a water park, and a zoo, according to Planet Ware.

Oh, and it's also home to Escobar's infamous Narco Hippos.

Caño Cristales

Caño Cristales is also known by many names, including the Liquid Rainbow or the River of Five Colors. This natural landmark is noted for showing Colombia's natural beauty. Algae give the river a myriad of colors that are certainly beautiful to look at.

The area was formerly impossible to reach due to the presence of rebels, but tourists are now slowly flocking in. It is still quite remote, though, but reaching the "Rainbow River" is certainly a challenge for those seeking an adventure.

Ciudad Perdida AKA The Lost City of Teyune

According to Touropia, the Lost City of Teyune, Ciudad Perdida, is a pre-Colombian settlement built by the Tayrona people in the eighth century. It is located deep in the heart of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains and was only discovered in the 1970s. Now, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, with people often taking a four-day hike across the mountains and jungles just to reach it. Yet another adventure for travelers wanting a challenge.

Tayrona National Natural Park

Want stunning and mostly unspoiled beaches? Tayrona National Natural Park has plenty of them. It is a sprawling nature reserve with plenty of hidden coves and beaches. However, the secret of the place is already out, and it's best to avoid the place during peak season and visit during the low season between February to November.

Cartegena

If you love Spanish-era architecture, Cartagena is the place for you. The city is perhaps one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with walls and old buildings that have been preserved for centuries. It is also home to beautiful restaurants and is a gateway to many of Colombia's other tourist destinations. Traveling through the streets makes one feel back in time, with an old-world feel in the middle of the new world.
