An 89-year-old California grandma with dementia was killed by her family's pit bull that almost ate her alive.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the pit bull fatally mauled Joan Caffiel while she was being watched by her hired caregiver, Jelena Kelly, on Tuesday morning.

Kelly told KLAS she left the California grandma and the dog inside a bedroom and went to the kitchen, Crime Online reported. The caregiver noted that she heard a "strange noise" before returning to the bedroom and finding the pit bull mauling Caffiel.

Kelly said the dog had the California grandma by the neck as he dragged her body to another room. The caregiver noted that the pit bull was "pretty much eating her alive" at that point.

According to Caffiel's grandson, Peyton Faircloth, his grandma recently developed severe dementia and needed a full-time caregiver to assist her.

Caffiel's grandson was also there during the attack. But it was Kelly who reportedly called the police before 10 a.m. Faircloth said Kelly called him, and she was screaming.

"The caregiver was with my grandmother. She knows what happened, I don't know what happened," he told KVVU.

Caffiel's grandson said Buc, a rescue pit bull, has never been aggressive in the six years they had him. He noted that the dog was "very, very protective" of Caffiel.

However, a neighbor told KVVU that she was cautious around the pit bull, and its owners would have it outside unleashed.

The California grandma, who lived with her nephew and his son in the Pennwood Avenue home, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The pit bull was turned over to animal control after he was found at a nearby residence. However, KLAS reported that Joan Caffiel's family does not want the pit bull euthanized.
