A Florida man armed with a firearm intervened to stop a brutal attack on a pregnant woman in a Publix parking lot on Saturday.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said Cole Joseph Danisment, 27, became furious with the Florida pregnant woman carrying his child and began hitting her at a Publix parking lot, landing some punches on her face.

Even after she fell to the ground, Danisment continued to attack the woman, who was 14 weeks pregnant. He even stomped on her head and upper body, Fox News reported.

A man nearby saw the attack and thought the assault was "so brutal in nature" that he feared for the woman's life, so he pulled out his gun on Danisment to stop the attack, which the attacker did.

The responding officers reported that the victim was "covered in large amounts of blood" and may have suffered a fractured nose. The Florida pregnant woman and the attacker had been dating for about a year and living together for about a month before the attack.

Danisment was arrested in October for domestic abuse against the victim, showing a pattern of violent behavior toward her, which prompted the court to issue a no-contact order. Danisment reportedly told police he had "seen red" before he blacked out and did not deny the attack.

Armed Civilians, Like the Florida Man, Stopping Attackers Are Not New

Multiple incidents exist in which armed men, like the Florida man, intervened to stop a murder spree. Last October, a man and a woman in their fifties were strolling through a Lancaster, Pennsylvania mall when bullets rang out in the JCPenney wing, close to Reeds Jewelry Store.

The man turned to his wife with composure and instructed her to head in the opposite direction. After that, he exited the store and went into the main mall area to see what was making all the noise, and he did so while brandishing the pistol he was legally allowed to carry.

Prosecutors claimed he confronted a young man armed with a gun after the latter shot three other people, including a bystander shopping with her family, Penn Live reported.

Lancaster County District Attorney Heather Adams noted that if the armed civilian had not taken the actions he did, many more individuals at the mall that day might have been injured or killed.

Is It Okay to Allow Civilians to Legally Carry Firearms in Public?

Data from the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center at Texas State University showed that in 433 mass shootings over the past two decades, only 22 had an armed bystander who shot and killed the perpetrator, according to The New York Times.

That means the likelihood of being rescued by an armed citizen is quite remote. The data also showed that it was 42 times when bystanders physically subdued the attackers, often by tackling or striking them.

The Grio reported that people who did not have guns were much more likely to stop mass shooters than those who did.
