Horrific Crimes That Shocked the Fashion World

Gianni Versace is just one of the many deaths that remained disturbing to fashion enthusiasts, fans, and the general public. Here are some of the details regarding his gruesome murder and other horrific crime stories that shocked the fashion world.

Gianni Versace

The Italian fashion designer had just finished having breakfast at News Café on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida, when serial killer Andrew Cunanan pulled a gun and shot him twice in the back of his head in July 1997.

Gianni Versace had just returned home from the cafe, which was only a few blocks away from his mansion, when he was shot while climbing the steps to his home. Versace's blood stained the coral front steps of his property after the shooting.

Cunanan, who was once a male prostitute, made international headlines in the days that followed. He was also suspected of killing four other men and was already on the federal 10 most wanted list at the time he killed Versace.

As police closed in, Cunanan killed himself on a shuttered houseboat about 40 blocks north of the mansion eight days after he murdered Versace.

Investigators still do not know why Cunanan killed Versace and his other victims in the crime spree that spread from Minneapolis to Chicago to Miami Beach even after more than two decades later.

Dorothy Stratten

Dorothy Stratten moved from Canada to Los Angeles after local pimp Paul Snider sent Playboy photos that made her noticed by Hugh Hefner himself. Stratten married young, and she ended up marrying Snider.

Stratten became Miss August 1979 before she worked as a bunny in the Playboy Club in Los Angeles. Hefner has great confidence in her and promoted her acting career by getting her small television parts.

Snider and Stratten eventually divorced, and he became her stalker. Stratten then had a new boyfriend, who was director Peter Bogdanovich. Bogdanovich was about to make her the protagonist in a film.

But Snider pushed and continued to see her under the guise of divorce proceedings. In August 1980, Stratten's roommate returned home and saw parked cars, and she thought Stratten and Snider had reconciled.

However, hours passed, and no one left the room. The roommate then decided to check the room and discovered the naked corpses of Stratten and Snider. It was a murder-suicide carried out with a 12-gauge shotgun. Reports said Snider shot her before he shot himself.

Maurizio Gucci

Italy was rocked in 1995 with the murder of Maurizio Gucci outside his office as he arrived at work. His ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani was an immediate suspect, as she had openly threatened to kill Gucci after their split.

In 1997, Reggiani was arrested for masterminding the murder. A tip-off led to her arrest and four others, including the hitman. Reggiani ended up in San Vittore prison after being sentenced to 26 years, but she came out in 2018 after serving 18 years.

When the press asked her why she hired a hitman after her release, Reggiani said she did it because she had bad eyesight and did not want to miss the hit.

Missing Vittorio Missoni

Missoni Fashion House started in 1953. Vittorio Missoni was the heir and former CEO of the fashion house that his parents started. Missoni was on a plane in January 2013 with his wife and two other associates.

The plane took off from Los Roques en route to Caracas, Venezuela, before it suddenly disappeared from all radars. In June 2013, the Italian fashion mogul's plane was discovered in the Caribbean Sea with no survivors.

Investigation later revealed that the pilot had an expired medical certificate and the airline had not received authorization to operate. Five bodies were recovered in the wreckage.

Missoni's case was not considered a crime, but his story still shocked and mystified many people in the fashion world as no one among the bodies recovered had been confirmed to belong to the Italian fashion mogul.
