Tragic events unfolded as a Columbus shootout between the local police and armed robbery suspects resulted in the death of one suspect, as reported by the Columbus Division of Police, according to FOX 19.

During the incident, an officer was shot and underwent surgery at Ohio Health Grant Medical Center.

The incident occurred in the late afternoon, around 4:45 PM, on eastbound Interstate 70, approximately a mile southwest of downtown Columbus.

The pursuit began when officers responded to reports of an armed robbery involving at least three suspects allegedly targeting a Porsche dealership and a bank.

The confrontation between the suspects and multiple officers escalated into a shootout on I-70 near Mound Street, killing one of the suspects and injuring one Columbus police officer.

The injured officer was swiftly transported to the hospital by their partner. He was initially in critical condition due to "massive blood loss," according to the police.

911 Calls, Body Camera Footage Described What Happened Before the Highway Shootout

New details emerged as the Whitehall Division of Police released body camera footage and 911 calls, shedding light on the events leading up to the shootout between officers and armed suspects, per NBC 4.

While the police declined to disclose the names of the eight officers involved, citing a recently passed victims' rights bill, the recordings began to piece together the sequence of crimes.

According to the audio recording of a 911 call, one man reported the presence of a suspect inside a Porsche dealership's showroom on N. Hamilton Road, who was demanding keys to a car.

Simultaneously, another person in the dealership's parking lot contacted emergency services, informing them that the suspect had a gun and was attempting to steal keys from individuals.

The second caller then described the suspect running out of the dealership, entering a black Porsche Cayenne, and swiftly driving away while urging others in the background to let him escape.

The incident at the dealership involved only one suspect, who later traveled approximately 20 miles across the city, where other suspects robbed a Third Bank branch on Hilliard Rome Rd, reportedly taking around $90,000. However, the exact amount is yet to be confirmed by authorities.

Brief snippets of body camera footage captured officers attempting to block the stolen Porsche in the bank's drive-through.

While two officers stood outside their vehicles, armed and issuing commands, the suspects managed to maneuver the Porsche out and escaped as a third officer reversed their vehicle.

An officer at the scene informed others that the suspect had forcefully rammed their way out.

Second Suspect Arrested, Third Suspect Still At Large, Police Say

The Columbus Division of Police announced on Friday that they have apprehended a suspect in connection with the shootout, 10 TV reported. However, the identity of the arrested individual has not been disclosed, as they have not yet been formally charged.

During a press briefing Friday morning, Columbus Police Assistant Chief Greg Bodker stated that officers executed several arrest warrants, took multiple individuals into custody, conducted interviews, and expressed confidence that charges would ultimately be filed against someone.

In addition, the police clarified through social media that only one of the suspects involved in Thursday's incident has been identified and interviewed thus far.

Authorities are still searching for a third party who remains unidentified.
