"Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" may be competing at the box office, but the two films have come together to create the "Barbenheimer" memes. This resulted in a massive success for both films.

The two films are seen to deliver big boosts to Hollywood as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike cripples production in the industry. In total, "Barbenheimer" attracted movie fans in record numbers for the year's biggest opening in North America, taking a combined $235.5 million in box office revenues.

In terms of what they are about, the two films are regarded as opposites, with "Barbie" being about Mattel's iconic Barbie dolls while "Oppenheimer" is about the man who created the atomic bomb. This contrast helped inspire the memes, which, in turn, generated interest for both titles.

The memes became so big that Warner Bros. executives acknowledged how much they helped make either movie a success. "The 'Barbenheimer' thing was a real boost for both movies," admitted Warner Bros.' president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein. "It is a crowning achievement for all of us."

This was a big start to the summer after "The Flash" and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" underperformed at the box office.

'Oppenheimer' Wins Over Critics While 'Barbie' Wins at the Box Office

Critics also gave both films some very big marks, as both were certified "Fresh" at Rotten Tomatoes. "Oppenheimer" took the critical win with a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was very close as "Barbie" received a 90% score.

Financially, however, "Barbie" won at the Box Office. According to CNA Lifestyle, "Barbie" topped the box office with a massive $155 million in ticket sales from North American theatres. It surpassed "The Super Mario Bros Movie" and now has the biggest opening of the year. It also broke the weekend record for a film directed by a woman, with director Greta Gerwig showing that she can hang with the likes of Christopher Nolan in terms of box office success.

"Oppenheimer," also had a big showing at the box office, earning $80.5 million in North America. It is now Nolan's biggest non-Batman debut and is also one of the best-ever openings for an R-rated biographical drama.
