Donald Trump has been indicted again, this time for running interference in the 2020 elections and the events leading to January 6, where he tried to overturn the election results after he lost to winner and current president, Joe Biden.

Trump has been previously indicted over his porn star hush money payment, his classified documents scandal, and now, his 2020 federal election interference and January 6. He is also currently facing an indictment in Georgia over election interference in that state.

This latest indictment charges Donald Trump with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, conspiracy against rights, and finally, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding.

Special Counsel Jack Smith announced the charges on Tuesday and slammed the January 6 Capitol insurrection as an "unprecedented assault" on democracy. He added, "It was fueled by lies: Lies by the defendant targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the U.S. government - the nation's process of collecting, counting, and certifying the results of the presidential election."

According to CBS News, the indictment stated that despite losing the election, Trump "was determined to remain in power." This led to his 2-month-long scheme that involved spreading false information that the election was stolen, pressuring Mike Pence to overturn the election results, setting up fake electors, and January 6.

"These claims were false, and the defendant knew they were false," stated the indictment, adding that Trump and his allies "repeated and widely disseminated them anyway."

Donald Trump Enlisted 'Six Unnamed Co-Conspirators' in Plot To Steal 2020 Elections

In his plot to overturn the election, Trump was aided by six unnamed co-conspirators, as stated by prosecutors. These co-conspirators include several attorneys and a Justice Department official.

According to ABC-7, these co-conspirators helped in enlisting the "fake electors" in seven key battleground states, helped use the Justice Department to conduct "sham election crime investigations, and pressured then-VP Mike Pence "alter the election results."

As expected, the Trump campaign is spinning this as the Biden administration going after his top election rival. In a statement on Truth Social, the Trump campaign said, "The lawlessness of these persecutions of President Trump and his supporters is reminiscent of Nazi Germany in the 1930s, the former Soviet Union, and other authoritarian, dictatorial regimes. President Trump has always followed the law and the Constitution, with advice from many highly accomplished attorneys."

January 6 Rioters Mention Trump as the Reason Why They Rioted at the Capitol

The 2020 election investigation into Trump also looked into the rioters on January 6. So far, over 1,100 people have been charged in that riot, and in many of these cases, they said they did it because Donald Trump told them to.

NPR's Tom Dreisbach stated in a radio show that Trump's name came up in all of the records for those who were arrested in the riot. "The records include Facebook messages and tweets from people who responded and then at that moment started making plans to come to D.C. There's this one message that really sticks out to me from a guy who texted his friend, if Trump tells us to storm the bleeping Capitol, I'ma (ph) do that then," he said.

It was noted that some of the pro-Trump rioters blamed it on Trump, with many telling NPR, "Trump told us the election was stolen. We believed him. He told us to come to D.C. on January 6 and march to the Capitol. He's the commander-in-chief. We listened."
