Android phones seem to keep getting larger, but that doesn't mean everybody prefers one. Those looking to purchase a shiny new Android phone without the size issue will be happy to know that earlier this week Samsung announced the Galaxy S5 Mini.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is the third of the Galaxy S Minis, a lineage that dates back to the Galaxy S3 Mini. The devices have never been as popular as the larger variants mostly due to pricing issues and specifications that don't satisfy. The year before's Galaxy S model can usually be picked up at around the same cost or for less than the current year's Mini model, and it has way better specs (read: Galaxy S3 = Galaxy S4 Mini).

The Galaxy S5 Mini boasts a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display that pleases viewers with a 720x1280 resolution, an improvement from the 2013 Galaxy S4 Mini's 540x960 pixels. Underneath the hood, Samsung has packed in a 1.4GHz quad-core processor supported by 1.5GB of RAM. Internal storage sits at 16GB that can be expanded by 64GB via the microSD slot. All of this will be experienced through Android 4.4 KitKat, which will be onboard out of the box.

The Galaxy S5 Mini's rear shooter takes stills at 8 megapixels while the front-facing camera is capable of pictures with 2.1 megapixels. Battery capacity has also been upgraded from the Galaxy S4 Mini's to 2,100mAh.

"We always strive to develop devices that appeal to a range of consumer tastes and styles." said JK Shin, the CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communication at Samsung Electronics. "The Galaxy S5 mini allows consumers to enjoy the iconic design and essential and useful features of the Galaxy S5 through a maximized minimalism approach."

The Galaxy S5 Mini is also LTE-friendly and comes with Ultra Power Saving Mode, S Health, a Private Mode, and a Kids Mode. Many of the bigger Galaxy S5s feature a heart rate monitor, fingerprint scanner, connectivity with wearables, and IP67 dust and water resistance.

The Galaxy S5 will go on sale in early July in Russia before hitting other markets. When it does ship, customers will be able to pick up the Galaxy S5 Mini in Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue, and Copper Gold. Samsung has not yet announced pricing, but the Galaxy S5 Mini will most likely retail around the same price point that the Galaxy S4 Mini debuted at: $400.
