Louis van Gaal's English Premier League debut with Manchester United did not go as planned after absorbing a 2-1 loss against Swansea on Saturday.

As expected, Manchester United fans were disappointed with the results, but former manager David Moyes was not surprised with the result, saying that van Gaal needs time at Old Trafford to turn the club into a serious contender again.

Moyes, who was sacked in April following Manchester United's disappointing performance last season, said that the Dutch manager needs more time to do what he wants to do at Old Trafford, including building his own team.

"Everybody knew it was going to take time," Moyes said via Sport360. "Taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson for anybody, it would take time. Louis van Gaal will need the time to do the job as well. He'll need to have that opportunity to change things and get a team he wants."

Moyes, who went under fire after Manchester United finished seventh last season, told reporters that he was devastated when he was fired from the job, saying that he was not given enough opportunity to show what he can do at Old Trafford.

"I was devastated to lose the job because it was something I felt I could make a real success of," Moyes said via ESPN FC. "We knew it was going to take time to make the necessary changes. It was going to take time to evolve, but we were in the process of making other important changes. In the end, I don't feel I was given time to succeed or fail."

Moyes felt that he could have led the team to greater heights, saying that the United job was the right one for him despite the tremendous pressure of filling the shoes left by Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Scottish football manager cited his previous stint with Everton, the team he led to Champions League qualification and an FA Cup final appearance over the 11 years where he was also named as manager of the season thrice.
