Miss Venezuela was crowned on Oct. 9, but viewers were less than thrilled with the way the pageant was handled.

Critics felt the show was austere but that it didn't honor the late Monica Spear, who was killed in early 2014 along with her husband in a roadside robbery. They were shot in front of their 5-year-old daughter.

Many took to social media to express their disappointment.

"She also won #MissVzla having been #MissGuarico. They killed her, and on #MissVzla2014, they forgot to mention her," one user said.

Another said, "#MissVzla2014 quickly forgets its ex queens quickly. Monica Spear was murdered this year. She deserved a great tribute."

And another viewer said that while the pageant didn't remember her, Venezuelans sure did.

It would have also been the 10th anniversary of Spear's win as Miss Venezuela. Spear was much beloved in Venezuela, and she starred in telenovelas in the country.

The champion, Mariana Jimenez, did take some time to honor Spear. After the event, she dedicated her crown to the late beauty queen.

"I'm emotional because this sash means a lot," she said. "It meant a lot to receive from Miss Universe. I dedicate it to Monica spear; it's for you, Monica. I give you that crown and that sash."

She also explained that she didn't know why she wasn't honored during the ceremony but that she was making it right the following day by honoring Spear. Jimenez said it was an honor to wear the crown and sash, just as Spear did before her.

In September, Spear's killers were jailed.

The three men pleaded guilty, and their sentences ranged from 24 and 26 years in jail. The family was visiting Spear's native country when their car's tires were punctured. As they were waiting for help, they were attacked by the group.
