New York Yankees successfully struck a deal with Chase Headley as reports revealed that the third baseman signed a four-year deal with the club on Monday.

Headley, who was traded from San Diego Padres to the Yankees before the MLB trade deadline last season, agreed to a four-year contract worth $52 million according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

The 30-year-old third baseman had an impressive year last season as he batted .243 with 13 homeruns and 49 RBIs. In 58 games with the Yankees, Headley averaged .262 with six homeruns and 17 RBIs.

Sources say that Headley opted to return to New York instead of accepting a lucrative deal from the San Francisco Giants, who made a strong push to acquire him after losing former third baseman Pablo Sandoval to the Boston Red Sox earlier in the offseason.

The Yankees' decision to sign Headley to a new deal raises questions about Alex Rodriguez's future in New York. Rodriguez will be returning from a one-year suspension, but general manager Brian Cashman recently said that A-Rod will have to earn his spot at third base again.

"Rodriguez is going to compete for at-bats and for a position," Cashman said last month. "The position would be third, and obviously DH, and that's it. Maybe some time at first base. He may be eventually the everyday third baseman, he may be the everyday DH; I just don't know."

Meanwhile, the Yankees are also expected to improve their rotation this offseason, but it appears that they are not interested in acquiring Max Scherzer.

Most analysts are convinced that Scherzer, who went 18-5 last season with a 3.15 ERA and 252 strikeouts, will make the Yankees a strong contender next season.

Cashman said in a recent interview, however, that the team is not planning to sit down with the 30-year-old pitcher as he has reportedly informed teams that he is looking for a long-term deal worth around $200 million. Cashman said that Scherzer's asking price is way higher than their current budget for a starting pitcher.

"I think that's a lot higher level than we're willing to play in right now," Cashman said of Scherzer's price tag via NY Daily News. "I don't think Yankee fans will be looking at Max Scherzer."
