The Atlanta Falcons and the New York Jets share something in common: both teams are having unexpected seasons so far.

Led by rookie Geno Smith, the Jets -- following their 30-28 victory over the Falcons last night -- have found a way to stay above water en route to a winning record and only one game behind divisional rival New England in a season when everyone expected them to tank from the beginning. The Falcons, on the other hand, are 1-4 after coming off one of the most spectacular seasons in team history. The 2012 squad went 14-2 in the regular season and clinched home field advantage before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. This year's team has already lost twice as many games.

Monday night's game was mostly a back-and-forth affair, although the Jets seemed confident and in control throughout. Smith, who entered the game with some of the worst numbers in the league including a league-worst 11 turnovers, was extremely efficient, tossing three touchdowns and remaining mistake-free with no picks on the day.

"My confidence is always sky-high," Smith said. "Nothing can bring me down."

Smith was taken down four times - twice by former Giant Osi Umenyiora - but quickly shook it off and kept his focus on the game ahead of him.

"It's a mindset," he said. "I made it my duty to come out here and not put the ball on the ground and not put my team in jeopardy."

Despite Smith's performance, the Falcons clawed back at every opportunity they had and held the lead in the final minutes. Quarterback Matt Ryan threw for more than 300 yards in the air and had a pair of touchdowns. Julio Jones had 8 grabs for 97 yards and veteran tight end Tony Gonzalez caught 10 balls for 99 yards.

Although the Falcons had the lead in the final minutes, the Jets stormed down the field and kicker Nick Folk nailed the game-winner to put New York above .500 on the season.
