Eugenio Derbez hosted the 2014 Teletón México on Dec. 5 and 6, and ended up angering many. He did not maintain a cheery disposition. Instead, Derbez called out people who weren't donating.

At one point, Derbez said it appeared that they weren't going to reach the goal and that the Mexicans he knows stands by each other in times of trouble, despite political differences.

"Today we are so mad, so worried about other stuff that we forgot to [come together,]" he said. "Today those of us who are trying to extend a helping hand to our Mexican children, we are attacked, we are crucified. They don't believe us."

He specifically addressed social media critics and asked why people believe those who hide behind anonymity instead of the celebrities who showed their faces at the telethon.

Derbez's words were not well received by many viewers, who explained that they were hurt about the missing and presumed to be dead university students from Ayotzinapa.

More than a week after the telethon, Derbez continued to get negative messages, which prompted him to shut down his Facebook account. He had more than 9 million followers, notes La Opinion. He is still active on his Twitter account, and people are still sharing their disapproval of Derbez through other social media sites.

A 10-year-old indigenous girl called out Derbez in a video that was posted to YouTube.

"You're mistaken, Eugenio," she said. "We that study are not interested in your dumb programs or your false sentiments. I study real philosophy ... not like your dumb Armando Hoyos [Derbez's character on 'La Fea Mas Bella']. You're mistaken when you say that Mexicans aren't united. Yes, we are united, but against people who try to manipulate us and against corruption."

She added that people who are poor have no trouble sharing their food or homes and that Derbez and other rich Televisa actors have probably not been as welcoming to indigenous people.

The girl also criticized Derbez for using a teleprompter during the telethon. She said that she doesn't need a teleprompter to say what she feels because it comes from her heart.

Next, the girl told Derbez that if he thinks she is being manipulated and doesn't know what she's talking about then he should join her in a public debate.

"Let's see if you show your face or if you're going to hide behind the television," she said.
