Spare Parts

Starring George Lopez, Marisa Tomei, Alexa Vega and Jamie Lee Curtis, the new Liosngate film tells the story of four Hispanic high school students form a robotics club. With no experience, 800 bucks, used car parts and a dream, this rag tag team goes up against the country's reigning robotics champion, MIT. The film has been receiving a small marketing campaign by Lionsgate, but it is currently targeting Latino audiences in hopes of reliving the success of "Instructions Not Included." Lionsgate will open the film in 400 theaters and plans on expanding it in the next few weeks.

Blackhat

The major release of the week is Michael Mann's latest feature starring Chris Hemsworth. The feature tells the story of a furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners who hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta. The film is among the most anticipated this year, but reviews have not been good. The film currently has a 46 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes and the script has been criticized as amateur. Universal plans on opening the film in 2,400 theaters.

Paddington

The Weinstein Company will release the British family film "Paddington" to rave reviews. The movie tells the story of a young Peruvian bear that travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he meets the kind Brown family, who offer him a temporary haven. The film stars Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent, Nicole Kidman, Ben Whishaw and Hugh Bonneville. The movie opened in Britain last year and was nominated for a BAFTA award. Originally, the film was expected to be released in December, but the Weinstein Company wanted to avoid the hectic holiday season. With great reviews and being released in 3,000 theaters, the feature is likely to appeal to family audiences.

The Wedding Ringer

Sony will release a new wedding comedy starring Josh Gad and Kevin Hart. The comedy follows a socially awkward guy who enters into a charade by hiring the owner of a company that provides best men for grooms two weeks shy of his wedding. The film was not screened for critics and as a result there are no reviews. However, pundits expect the film to dominate the box office especially since there are no light comedies currently in the marketplace. Expect the movie to open with at least $20 million.

American Sniper

The award-winning Clint Eastwood film tells the story of Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, whose pinpoint accuracy saved countless lives on the battlefield and turned him into a legend. However, back home to his wife and kids after four tours of duty, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind. The feature has been in release for a month and has become an instant box office hit in four theaters. Warner Bros. expects the film will be nominated for the Oscars and expects it to continue to be a box office hit. Opening in 3,200 theaters expect the movie to resemble the success of "Lone Survivor" and "Zero Dark Thirty."

Still Alice

The Julianne Moore starrer tells the story of Alice Howland, who is happily married with three grown children and is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a devastating diagnosis, Alice and her family find their bonds tested. The premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, where it scored rave reviews and became the front-runner for the Best Actress award. Moore has already won the Golden Globe among other awards and is expected to win the Academy Award in February. After a successful qualifying run in December, Sony Pictures Classics expects "Still Alice" to be an art house success.

In art house theaters, Film Movement will release the Italian Oscar submission "Human Capital" while IFC Films will release Patrick Stewart's "Match." Tribeca Film will release "Still Life" and Amplify will unveil "Little Accidents" with Elizabeth Banks.
