Due to a Paraguayan law that bans abortions, except in cases where the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother, a 10-year-old girl who was impregnated when her stepfather raped her is not allowed to get an abortion.

As reported by CNN, The Paraguayan Ministry of Health says that there is no indication that the girl’s health is at risk. But despite what the government says, the family of the girl (who is now 22 weeks pregnant) is pleading for an abortion.

The human rights organization Amnesty International is backing them up, asserting that the age of the girl in question should be cause enough for an exception to the current law.

Guadalupe Marengo, an Amnesty International official, stated this week, "The physical and psychological impact of forcing this young girl to continue with an unwanted pregnancy is tantamount to torture. "The Paraguayan authorities cannot sit idly by while this young rape survivor is forced to endure more agony and torment."

On April 21, the 10 year old girl was checked into a hospital by her mother complaining of stomach pains. Hospital tests showed that she was 21-weeks pregnant.

As reported by the Daily Beast, her mother requested that her daughter be given an abortion. When it was revealed that her stepfather was the one who had impregnated her, the mother was taken into custody.

According to Monalisa Munoz, the prosecutor in charge of the case, a warrant was issued for the stepfather, who is currently still at large.

A 2013 United Nations report stated that 2 million girls under the age of 14 give birth in developing countries yearly. A large number of these girls suffer resulting long-term or even fatal health problems due to the unwanted pregnancies.

Paula Avila-Guillen, the Latin America and Caribbean advocacy adviser at The Center for Reproductive Rights, remarked on the case: “No 10-year-old is ready to be a mother. That will carry trauma for her whole family.”
