With Mother’s Day coming up, families will have time to relax and enjoy a good movie. While there are a ton of films currently in theaters, some families won’t want to leave their homes. The following is a list of movies to see on mother’s day.

“The Kids are All Right”: Starring Julianne Moore and Annette Benning, this family drama tells the story of two children who are conceived by artificial insemination and bring their father into their family life. The 2010 film was well received and was nominated for four Oscars including Best Picture. It was also a huge box office hit and went on to make $20 million. The film features two dynamic performances from Moore and Benning and also features an incredible turn by Mark Ruffalo, who received his first Oscar nomination. It may not be the ordinary Mother’s Day film but it is an extraordinary feature.

“Terms of Endearment”: Starring Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger and Jack Nicholson, this film tells the story of hard-to-please Aurora looking for love and her daughter's family problems. This 1983 film won the Academy Award for Best Picture as well as Best Actress and Best Actor. The movie has been hailed for its great story and for its amazing performances and to this day, the movie still holds up after 30 years. If you’re looking for an emotional journey, this movie is likely to bring out the emotions it did back in the 80s.

“Volver”: Pedro Almodovar’s 2006 melodrama stars Penelope Cruz in one of his finest films in the last 10 years. The film, also starring Carmen Maura, tells the story of a mother who returns to her home town in order to fix the situations she couldn't resolve during her life. The film was hailed when it was released and gave Cruz her first Oscar nomination. It also won multiple awards including Best Actress at Cannes. Almodovar’s movie is about love, forgiveness and redemption and it is perfect for those looking for a comic and feel good piece.

“Boyhood”: While the movie’s central character is a young boy, the heart of this film is Patricia Arquette’s character, the boy’s mother. The film tells the story of the life of Mason, from early childhood to his arrival at college. When the film was released last year, audiences and critics raved about the experimental nature and its originality. However, at the core of the film was a familial relationship and a mother’s journey to raise her children. Arquette received a plethora of awards and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. At almost three hours, this a movie worth watching if only for Arquette’s incredible turn.

“Mildred Pierce”: Starring Joan Crawford, this classic film tells the story of Mildred Pierce, whose cheating husband leaves her and, as a result, she must prove she can become independent and successful. However, conflict arises when she cannot seem to win the approval of her spoiled daughter. The film was hailed back in 1945 and won Crawford her only Academy Award. The story has resonated for years and Todd Haynes even adapted it into a 2011 miniseries that went on to win Kate Winslet a Golden Globe and Emmy awards. Whichever version is chosen, audiences will be delighted by this story of sacrifice and love.

Other recommendations include “Frozen River,” starring Melissa Leo, and “Kramer vs. Kramer,” starring Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman. For those interested in seeing movies about monster moms, “Precious,” “Monster-in-Law,” “Savage Grace” and “August: Osage Country” are among some of the best films to see.
