"Shadowhunters," ABC's adaptation of Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments" novels, has already received considerable buzz since the network's hashtag marketing campaign #WhoIsRaphael became a trending topic, reports CarterMatt.

The hashtag generated speculation of what actor would be chosen to play Raphael Santiago, a central figure in the book series who is the former leader of a vampire clan in New York City. The actor has been revealed as "Are We There Yet?" alum David Castro.

Enstarz reports that "Shadowhunters" started production this May in Toronto with a 2016 release planned.

The series follows the story of a teenage girl named Clary who turns 18 and discovers that her family tree is populated with Shadowhunters, which are angel-human hybrids tasked with hunting demons. Clary learns the astonishing news when her mother, Jocelyn (Maxim Roy), is kidnapped, introducing her to an entirely new world with Jace, a fellow Shadowhunter.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive-producer McG gave fans insight into what they can expect from ABC Family's version of story.

When asked in what ways he is trying to separate the ABC project from the 2013 feature film "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," McG told Entertainment Weekly, "The mythology is very much in keeping with the book. I look at the television format for the fans to engage evermore deeply in the stories and the characters because you have more hours to parcel out the story itself."

Fans of the film "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" should not expect to see the same actors in ABC's TV reboot. The new cast will include Mexican actress Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon, Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane, Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood, Alan Van Sprang as Valentine Morgenstern, and Jon Cor as Hodge Starkweather.

"I'm excited to see ABC Family bring the world of the Shadowhunters to life. As a huge fan of long-form television drama, I can't wait to see the story unfold and for the fans to have more time with the world and the characters," Clare said in a released statement.

"The Mortal Instruments" is a series of six young adult fantasy novels written by Clare that have been on the New York Times bestseller list for 122 consecutive weeks, with over 35 million copies in print worldwide.

The "Shadowhunters" TV series is scheduled for a 2016 release date to be announced.
