After getting ridiculed for not getting a big batter this season, the Mets finally get one.

According to NBC Sports, the Mets acquired Yoenis Cespedes from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for right-handed pitchers Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa. The Mets sit in second place in the division at 52-50 and are three games back of the division leading Washington Nationals in the National League East. They are 3.5 games back of the second wild card spot.

With the acquisition of Cespedes, the Mets finally have a power hitter in their lineup. Cespedes, who was traded from the Red Sox to the Tigers this past offseason, is hitting .293 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs in 102 games. The Mets leading home run hitter is Curtis Granderson with 16.

Earlier this week, the Mets almost acquired then Milwaukee Brewer outfielder Carlos Gomez for injured starting pitcher Zack Wheeler and infielder Wilmer Flores. Everyone thought that the trade was official and actually made Flores cry, but the trade was canceled at the last moment. Eventually, Carlos Gomez was acquired in a trade by the Houston Astros.

The Mets have a more reliable player in Cespedes. He has shown he can played under the bright lights of New York City. In 2013, he participated in the Home Run Derby and put on a show. You can check out the video of his home run derby below:

For the first time in a long time, Mets fans get to see meaningful games in August and September with the trade for Cespedes.

Can they catch up with the Nationals in the National League East? Can they clinch one of the two wild card spots? It remains to be seen.
