It has now been three seasons since Real Madrid has won the Spanish league title. Moreover, the team has only won the league once in the last seven years. This is a startling statistic when one considers that Madrid leads all teams with 32 Spanish League titles throughout its history.

After two straight failed title runs under Carlo Ancelotti, President Florentino Pérez opted for a new coach - Rafa Benítez. Benítez has not won any championship in years, but he might be the man to finally put the Madrid puzzle together. Here are some reasons why Los Blancos can win the Spanish league title in 2015-16.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

A year ago the Portuguese superstar put up 48 goals in Spain and 61 goals in all competitions. Not only was it the fifth straight year that Ronaldo scored 50 or more goals in all competitions, but those numbers were his best ever.

Moreover, he put them up at the age of 30, when many expect him to start declining.

Ronaldo is expected play as more of a forward in the upcoming season, giving him more opportunities to score goals, while also taking away defensive responsibility from him. This should make him far more effective and keep Real Madrid's offense at its height.

2. Defense

One of Real Madrid's biggest issues last season was defense. The 38 goals the team conceded placed them at fifth in the league and the worst among teams in the top four.

Benítez is known for being a stout defensive coach, and his work in the preseason has shown the team to be capable of creating a system in which two defensive lines move and work in consort. It provides for a system in which the effects of individual mistakes are minimized.

Finally a 4-2-3-1 formation insulates the defense better than the 4-3-3 formation under Ancelotti.

3. A More Consistent Keeper

One of the biggest problems Madrid faced in 2014-15 was the inconsistent goalkeeping of Iker Casillas. The netminder would have his great moments juxtaposed with head-scratching ones. His work on set pieces was always a reason for Real Madrid fans' heart rates to increase dramatically.

In essence, he was no longer at the level to carry this team, and some of his poor work cost the club in many games.

David De Gea might be the man to replace him, and he could give the team a tremendous upgrade. Even if he does not wind up being the man, Kiko Casilla and Keylor Navas are in more consistent form than Casillas, and that alone should help Madrid earn a few more points than it would have lost last season.

4. Rotation

In 2014-15 the defense was weak and the goaltending was a problem. However, what ultimately undid Real Madrid was fatigue. Ancelotti found his best XI and ultimately rode them into the ground.

Benítez is renowned for emphasizing a rotation policy on his team, allowing players to stay fresh during the course of a 10-month.

It might not make some players happy, but it will ensure that the team's best players are still healthy in the last months of the season and that the bench players are ready for action at any moment.

5. Gareth Bale

Bale had a dream season in 2013-14. That could not be farther from the case in 2014-15. He struggled to score and was often lacking the space to use his speed.

A great deal of that had to do with Ancelotti's emphasis on possession. With Madrid holding the ball in the opposition third for most of the game, Bale had little space to utilize his space, thus limiting one of his best assets.

Benítez might be looking to push Bale into a central role, which will give him greater attacking freedom. When he played in that position at Tottenham Hotspur, he thrived. He has yet to undertake that position at Madrid, but has gotten an audition there under Benítez. Look for him to thrive there and help Madrid to greater heights.
