Mexican-American star Becky G says she is living the American dream, and she has her grandparents for making that possible.

During an interview with Popsugar to discuss Cover Girl's #GirlsCan campaign, the Cover Girl spokesmodel explained how her grandparents inspired her song "We Are Mexico," which the singer released after Donald Trump made controversial and racist comments about Mexican immigrants.

"In that song in particular, I speak about my grandparents and the fact that they came here for a better life," said the 18-year-old. "They didn't know the language, and they learned it. They didn't have any form of transportation, and they figured it out. They had a family, and they made sure that their children had the best that they could supply for them -- although it wasn't much. And they made something out of nothing, and I had to do the same thing, but in my own way."

Born Rebecca Gomez, she was raised in California after her grandparents immigrated to the U.S. The singer also shared how her family's financial struggles, which forced them to move in with her grandparents and live in their converted garage, made the possibility of her dreams coming true a lot harder to imagine.

"I started at the most difficult time in my life. I was 9 years old, which is so young," continued the singer. "The percentage of chance that getting a record deal could actually happen was small, and I actually did it. I think this generation has done so many things to prove people wrong on stereotypes. And we're not doing it because we're trying to prove people wrong, but simply because we're doing things that we love to do."

The teenage star, who cites Latinas like Jennifer Lopez and Thalia as her idols and recently released the new single, "Break A Sweat," considers herself lucky.

"I definitely think I am living my American dream," she said. "You know everybody has different versions of that, but I think, in my case, I'm doing what I love to do. And not only that - I'm getting to do it on a level that I had only dreamed of. I'm living my teenage dream - you know? I get to travel the world, and I have such incredible fans, I get to perform on stage, and I get to make friends and meet incredible people."
