The inaugural Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition seemed a fresh and inviting proposition for Samsung fans back in 2013.

How could it not be? It was the first Samsung device to come without any manufacturer or wireless carrier bloatware while running on a "stock" version of Android instead of the normal TouchWiz and HTC Sense skin.

The Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition was basically a semi-Google Nexus smartphone with the Samsung branding on it. But due to unexplained circumstances, Google has since discontinued their GPE line of smartphones. The last being the HTC One M8 released in March 2014.

The small populace, who have purchased GPE smartphones, might have lost all hope of receiving software patches for their defunct devices. Luckily, a new report suggests that Google is slowly making amends, starting with the Galaxy S4 GPE.

A perceptive online informant named "Adric" told an Android-based website that Galaxy S4 GPE owners have started receiving the Android 5.1 update.

An insider from Android Police said that the upcoming OTA will update the Samsung S4 GPE. The said update will revamp the device from LRX21P to LMY470. The report also notes that "it's Android 5.1, not Android 5.1.1, the latest public release of the platform."

To those eager to patch their Galaxy S4 GPE but haven't been visited by the update notification yet, click here to download the OTA ZIP file. Users are encouraged to back up their files before proceeding with the manual installation.

Google is apparently on a roll this week with its OTA distributions.

In a recent Latin Post report, the search engine and mobile platform company has begun seeding the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update to a handful of older Sony Xperia models.

The firmware patch is currently seeding to the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z Wi-Fi and Xperia Tablet Z LTE models.

Not only that, users of older Nexus devices can now download Google's newest security update.

According to a Sept. 8 report from Android Police, the security update is now available via OTA distribution for users of the LG Nexus 4, LG Nexus 5, Motorola Nexus 6, Asus Nexus 7, and HTC Nexus 9.

GSM Arena explained that the Android version 5.1.1 will be unchanged despite the devices' new software build. LMY48M will serve as the devices' new build number that is the same as other Nexus devices, except versions of Nexus 6, which will have different build numbers.
