Screen Gems studio has partnered with the game developer Naughty Dog for the film adaptation of the Sony PlayStation 3 video game "The Last of Us." Renowned cult horror film director Sam Raimi and his company Ghost House Pictures are on-board to produce the project, ComingSoon reported.

Raimi will be joined by executives from Naughty Dog in the production of the adaptation. Neil Druckman, the game's Creative Director, will write the script for the film. The game developer's Presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra, and Game Director Bruce Straley will co-produce the film.

Wells is very optimistic about the film project and the people he will be working with. In a statement, the co-president said, "Our partnership with Sam Raimi, Ghost House Pictures, and Screen Gems to develop a film based on 'The Last of Us' Universe is a perfect fit."

He continued, "Since our game released last June, we've talked with many companies about making a film, but we couldn't have found better partners who share our creative vision and high standards. We look forward to collaborating with Sam, his team, and screen gems, to make a movie that will thrill fans of 'The Last of Us' and general audiences worldwide."

"The Last of Us" video game version features a post-apocalyptic story, according to Cinemablend. Set in the United States in the year 2033, it follows the story of a man named Joel trying to survive 20 years after the country was plagued by a deadly virus. He is accompanied by a girl named Ellie, who he must protect because she is believed to be an anti-virus carrier. In their quest to reach a group of survivors known as the Fireflies, they must fight their away against marauders, cannibals, and those infected by the virus.

The game was officially launched in June of last year exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Last Valentine's Day, the game released its expansion DLC, "The Last of Us: Left Behind". The DLC serves as a prologue of the single player mode of the game.
