The NBA announced that Milwaukee Bucks guard O.J. Mayo would be suspended for one game following Friday night's game where the star punched New Orleans Pelicans center Greg Stiemsma in the throat.

NBA President of Basketball Operations Rod Thorn issued a statement Saturday which said that the six-year veteran "has been suspended one game without pay for forcibly striking" Stiemsma, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The 6-foot-4 star was ejected with less than 2 minutes left in the first quarter following a flagrant foul 2 call. The incident occurred after Stiemsma set a screen for teammate Anthony Morrow.

The Bucks would go on to lose the game in overtime, 112-104.

Mayo will not play during the team's home game against the Washington Wizards on Saturday night.

The 26-year-old is currently averaging 11.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists a game while playing for his third team in three seasons. Mayo's career average is 14.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3 assists a game.

Mayo played one season of college hoops for the USC Trojans during the 2007-08 season where he averaged 20.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists a game.

The Trojans entered the NCAA tournament with a 21-12 record but lost during the first round to Kansas State. The team was also stripped of its victories from that season because of Mayo receiving improper benefits before attending the school.

Stiemsma came in to the league in 2009 but didn't become pro until 2011 when he played with the Boston Celtics. He is currently averaging 2.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and .7 assists this season. In his three year career with the NBA 6-foot-11 Wisconsin native has averaged 3.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, and .05 assists a game.
