The countdown until Halloween 2015 is underway and participants can expect to see many "Minions" and "Star Wars" character costumes on Oct. 31, according to NRF's 2015 Halloween Consumer Top Costumes Survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics.

And while the "Minions" and "Star Wars" costumes have garnered popularity due to the success of their franchises, there are other Halloween costumes that have become popular for the controversy they evoke.

The Huffington Post U.K. released photos of an Ebola Nurse costume by brandsonsale.com and halloweencostumes.com that comes equipped with a face mask, a white nurse outfit and blue gloves.

Despite the controversy surrounding the Ebola nurse set, social media users have tweeted their support of the costume.

Other controversial Halloween costumes that are making headlines this year include the Sexy Donald Trump costume from yandy.com, a bloody Cecil The Lion costume, an Islamic State militant costume, a Rachel Dolezal costume, and a Caitlyn Jenner costume.

Some have described these costumes as insensitive and crude, while others have described them as humorous. Although the opinions and feelings differ regarding the costumes, the lack of sales behind the costumes remains the same.

Bloomberg Businessweek reports most companies that distribute the controversial costumes barely make a profit from them. However, the costumes help these companies garner visibility and popularity.

"Today, the more controversial a costume is, the more likely it is to go viral. When that happens, the real benefit for a manufacturer is marketing, not sales revenue," Bloomberg's Claire Suddath states.

Rubie's Costume's executive vice president told Bloomberg's Businessweek, "Children just want to be a character from whatever TV show or movie they like that year, but adults are inspired by what they see on the news. Picking something current is becoming a bigger thing."
